2024 BMW 2 Series Coupe Redesign, Specs, Price

2024 BMW 2 Series Coupe Redesign, Specs, PriceThough the old saying “you can’t put a lot of bang for your buck in a car this size” is cliche at this point, it couldn’t be more appropriate when discussing BMW’s tiniest coupe. In a market saturated with trucks and SUVs rather than smaller cars, the BMW 2 Series Coupe nonetheless stands out as one of the most enjoyable vehicles on the road. 2024 2 Series is only available as a two-door coupe or a four-door Gran Coupe, which we analyze in detail here. Despite being in its second generation, the 2 Series has retained its reputation as one of the most enjoyable executive cars to drive. A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder produces 255 horsepower in the base model, and the kidney grille is back to a more conventional form. The M240i’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six generates 382 horsepower, keeping it competitive with cars like the Ford Mustang. Of course, the BMW’s design isn’t for everyone, and some may find the Toyota Supra, with which the M240i shares an engine, to be more aesthetically pleasing, but the rest of the car is well-polished and ready to please. Can it maintain BMW’s status as the market leader in the segment that cares most about the driver?

Cars now have a 12.3-inch iDrive eight curved gauge cluster display and a 14.9-inch iDrive eight primary infotainment touchscreen, replacing the older iDrive seven systems. The exterior satin aluminum trim on the 230i models has been replaced with the Shadowline trim on the M240i models. The black high-gloss interior trim was once available on the 230i but has since been discontinued. In addition to the rear-wheel-drive M240i, an all-wheel-drive 230i is now on sale.

Compared to its predecessor, the 2024 BMW 2 Series Coupe, the new model’s design is busy and complex. There are a lot of tricky corners that don’t go well with the round, bulbous tail that has been stretched over the back tires. Even if we have doubts, we must admit that purple looks cool. In contrast, the 2 Series Gran Coupe looks like someone slapped the front end of a 1 Series onto the back end of a Toyota Corolla and called it a coupe. In both models, LEDs are used for front and back lighting. For wheels, the base 230i has alloy rims that measure 18 inches. The M240i xDrive comes standard with a rear spoiler, an aggressive aero package, M alloy wheels, and Cerium Grey accents. Did we mention it is also available in purple? This year, the Shadowline trim package is standard on all models (last year, the four-cylinder cars had satin aluminum trim).

With a height of 54.8 inches, the new BMW 2 is lower to the ground than its predecessor. It’s bigger in every other respect as well. The length of the body is 179 inches, and the width is 72.4 inches. Both the 230i and xDrive are 54.8 inches tall. A 107.9-inch wheelbase supports the whole assembly. The M240i, with its distinctive M Sport design, is somewhat shorter (179.4 inches) and lower (55 inches) than the xDrive (55.3 inches). These numbers are worrisome. We like the bigger size’s extra room, but we must recognize the noticeable weight gain. Comparatively, the old 230i weighed 3,435 pounds, while the new one tips the scales at 3,519. The old M240i weighed 3,578 pounds, but the new one weighs 3,748 (or 3,871 with xDrive all-wheel drive).

Interior

The cabin of the 2024 BMW 2 Series Coupe makes it’s intent on being a driver’s car quite evident. All the essential controls face the driver and are conveniently located. There is little to no noticeable difference between this and a modern 3 Series or 4 Series, except for some (different) illuminated M designs on the door cards. BMW is also embracing minimalism, though the brand’s newest model, the 2, retains a select few controls. The infotainment’s volume and power buttons are separated from the climate control buttons. As with the traction mode selector, the driving-related controls are neatly arranged around the shifter. We like it better that way.

The 2 Series has several high-tech features as standard equipment, including dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, an electronic trunk release, eight-way power-adjustable front seats with a memory function for the driver, an auto-dimming interior and driver-side mirror, two 12-volt sockets, and an advanced key that remembers the most recent driver’s settings (including radio station presets). Adaptive cruise control, front and back parking sensors, front collision warning, active blind spot assist lane departure warning, and posted speed limits are some of the available advanced driver aid technologies. Interior ambient lighting, a power moonroof that opens in both directions, and Comfort Access keyless entry are all new features for the M240i.

The BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra have 10.5 cubic feet of trunk space, but BMW claims theirs is 13.2 cubic feet. This is the best in its class and easily outperforms other sedans like the Audi A3 and the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Carry capacity will be low on the list of must-have qualities for the average buyer looking for a 2 Coupe, so this is a nice bonus. For the rare times when you need to transport something more significant, the rear seats can be folded flat. Thanks to the secret storage bins under the center console and the front armrest, there’s enough space for your belongings. Two large compartments can be found in the door pockets. Between the two back seats is a small trunk for additional items.

Engine

The 230i gets its power from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, while the M240i receives it from a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six. The 230i and the M240i may be had with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The sole available transmission has eight gears and is fully automatic. The BMW 230i we tested accelerated from 0 – 60 mph in 5.1 seconds and covered the quarter mile in 13.7 seconds at 101 mph. Choose the M Sport and Dynamic Handling options for the 230i if you want the maximum performance since they include 19-inch wheels with performance tires, a sportier suspension, enhanced brakes, a variable-ratio steering system, and an electronically controlled rear differential. The M240i comes equipped with all these features and more as standard equipment. The model’s quick acceleration (from 0 – 60 mph in 3.6 seconds), smooth ride, and handling left us delighted during our testing. However, we wish it had a more steering feel, similar to the latest BMWs.

With its six-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive, the M240i achieves 23 mpg in the metropolis and 32 mpg on the interstate. The EPA estimates that the 230i’s rear-wheel-drive, four-cylinder engine will reach 26 cities and 35 highway mpg. The rear-wheel-drive 230i exceeded the EPA’s fuel economy estimate by 2 miles per gallon during our 75-mph fuel economy test. Check the EPA’s website for specifics on the 2-series’ gas mileage.
