The exterior of the seventh-generation BMW 3 Series has held up nicely over the years, and this refresh makes it look even better by eliminating a few minor annoyances and sharpening up the details. It’s almost unexpected that the grille has stayed the same size. It doesn’t stand out too much and goes well with the redesigned headlights, which no longer have a notch. The daytime running lights’ inverted L-shape is a sleek and contemporary touch. Glossy black air intake can be seen lower on the vehicle. In 2024, BMW added Skyscraper Grey metallic to the 3 Series color palette, and standard equipment included new 18-inch alloy wheels. On the side, not much has changed either.
The M Sport Package upgrades for the 330i and 330e include a larger central air inlet and significantly recessed air curtains. With an optional motorized deck lid, the 3-Series’ large trunk is convenient. The gas-powered sedan has 17 cubic feet of storage capacity, enough to put six bags behind the back seats or 17 in total with the second row folded down. The Mercedes-Benz C300 sedan could only fit 14 suitcases in one test, while the Alfa Romeo Giulia could hold 15 and five, respectively. We haven’t checked the 330e’s cargo capacity, but its battery pack reduces trunk space to 13 cubic feet.
The BMW iDrive eight system is quick and straightforward to use. The 12.3-inch gauge display and the 14.9-inch infotainment display in the 3-series are combined into a single screen that rests lightly on the dashboard. Even in bright sunshine, the high-resolution screens look sharp and are easy to read. A long list of technologies comes standard on this vehicle, including navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot. A head-up display is available as part of the Premium Package. There is also a Harman/Kardon sound system and a wireless charging pad for mobile devices.
BMW engine systems have a reputation for being nearly faultless. That would account for the lack of significant adjustments to the offering for the 2024 version. The base model of the 2024 BMW 3 Series, the 330i, is powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 255 horsepower and 294 lb-ft of torque. You can expect it to reach 60 miles per hour from a stop in the mid-5 second range when equipped with rear-wheel drive.
Next up is the 330e plug-in hybrid. In terms of power and torque, we expect the turbo-four and electric motor to provide the exact totals as the 2022 model, which come to 288 horsepower and 310 pound-feet. Once and for all, the M340i is the show-stopping performer that will have people wondering if they need the M3. Last year, a 48-volt mild hybrid system was added to the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine, and the 382 horses and 368 lb-ft of torque should carry over into this year. This model’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system allows it to sprint to 60 mph in slightly over four seconds.
The standard drivetrain for the 3 Series is rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive (xDrive) available as an option, and the transmission of choice is a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic. The EPA estimates that the 330e RWD will be the most fuel-efficient of the lot in 2022, and their numbers back up this claim: 28 mpg combined, or 75 MPGe, on gasoline; 22 miles on electric power alone.
2024 BMW 3 Series Release Date and Price
The 2024 BMW 3 Series is expected to debut in July 2023. The San Luis Potosi, Mexico, factory will produce the models destined for the United States.
We have no idea how much the 2024 BMW 3 Series will cost, but that should change as we get closer to the car’s release. A slight increase in price above the base 2023 model’s $41,450 is to be expected, as is the norm.
As expected, BMW’s main competition will come from the brand-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class. With a starting MSRP of $43,550, the C-Class is now more like a compact S-Class than ever before. The Mercedes isn’t quite as responsive to driver input and doesn’t provide a very expressive six-cylinder engine option.
