2024 BMW 5 Series Plug-In Hybrid Review, Pricing – Fans complain that the 2024 BMW 5-series lacks the agility of earlier models, but this roomy, comfortable, well-equipped luxury sedan is an attractive package. There are four powertrains, ranging from a quick turbo four-cylinder engine to a solid twin-turbo V-8 machine. A plug-in hybrid is also available for individuals who wish to go green.
In 2024, along with the mid-life design updates to the standard 530i, the BMW 5 Series Hybrid was launched to complement the seventh-generation 5 Series line. Since it’s still a relatively new product in the USA, it stays the same. A twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 engine, an electric motor, and a 12-kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack are all inside the 530e’s engine compartment. The machine is coupled to an 8-speed Sport automatic gearbox and sends output to either an all-wheel drivetrain or a rear-wheel drivetrain depending on the model (530e sDrive or 530e xDrive).

2024 BMW 5 Series Plug-In Hybrid Redesign
The outside of the 2024 5 Series hasn’t changed much from the previous year, maintaining its beautiful appearance. Gloss black highlights, an expansive sunroof, all-season run-flat tires, adaptive LED headlights with daytime running lights, and 18-inch alloy wheels are all standard equipment. Small blue accents set the 530e apart from its non-electric siblings, but the main difference is the charging port on the show left fender.
The 530e and 530e xDrive are long and stylish, measuring 194.6 inches in length, 73.5 inches in width, and 52.8 inches in height. The 530e weighs 4,264 pounds, making it somewhat heavier than its non-hybrid brothers. However, the xDrive is heavier and carries an extra 105 pounds since it has an AWD system, and both hybrids add about 600 pounds to a comparable non-hybrid version. The 5 Series’ famed interior room is made possible with a wheelbase that measures 117.1 inches below the surface.

Interior
The 5-series cockpit is a sophisticated environment thanks to its high-end amenities and attractive appearance. Compared to its predecessor’s reasonably dull cabin, it is a considerable improvement. It has a lot of technology and is also roomy for passengers in the back seats. We’ve used the optional 20-way multi-contour front seats, which are incredibly comfortable and adaptable in every manner possible. Although the regular chairs may not be as comfortable, you can still adjust them in 16 different ways. Six carry-on bags may fit in the BMW’s spacious trunk, comparable to what its rivals provide. However, there aren’t enough cubbies or storage spaces in the cottage. Due to the barrage pack, the plug-in hybrid 530e has two fewer carry-on bags and four fewer cubic feet of trunk capacity than non-hybrid models, but at least it still features folding rear seats, unlike many other hybrids.
On every 5-series, a substantial 12.3-inch high-resolution center display is standard. Every 5-series vehicle has a digital gauge display that the driver may customize to show various types of information. You may manage it by speaking multiple voice commands, touching the screen, or using BMW’s iDrive rotary knob. You can also operate the system with hand gestures if you choose BMW’s Gesture Control option, although we thought this was more of a novelty than anything else. The tech package comes with SiriusXM satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth audio, a USB port, and navigation.

Engine
Although all the 5-series variants are capable drivers, they lack the driving vigor we have come to anticipate from BMW. In our tests, the M550i accelerated through our acceleration runs faster than the Mercedes-AMG E53 and Audi S6, reaching 60 mph in only 4.1 seconds. Even the performance-oriented M550i has a light steering feel and a ride that seems more tuned for comfort than pure driving pleasure.
According to the EPA, the four-cylinder 530i is expected to get up to 25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the road. The six-cylinder 540i has a city/highway fuel economy rating of up to 25 mpg. The M550i’s more potent V-8 reduces those to 17 cities and 25 highway mpg. In our real-world testing, all three models we looked at outperformed expectations; the 530e earned 34 mpg, while the 540i and M550i achieved 31 mpg and 28 mpg, respectively. Visit the EPA website for additional details about the 5-series’ fuel efficiency.
2024 BMW 5 Series Plug-In Hybrid Release Date and Price
At $55,550, the electrified 530e is not significantly more expensive than the 530i; the AWD xDrive model costs $57,850. You’ll need to shell out $76,800 for the M550i to get all that V8 power. Considering that the M5 costs $103,700, that is still a great deal. These costs are MSRP and do not include tax, license, or a $995 destination fee.
