2024 BMW i8 M Redesign, Cost, Release DateThe upcoming i8—we like calling it the i8 M because it should be a significant performance boost over the current model—is in the works, as seen by BMW’s Vision M Next concept from mid-2019. The i8 M will be very different from the model it will eventually replace because it will have more power, a more extended range of electric power alone, a new look, and a better chassis. Even if the current i8 hasn’t lived up to BMW’s sporting expectations, it hasn’t deterred the German luxury company from developing high-end hybrid sports cars.

It’s difficult to recommend a specific model without knowing how the i8 M will be outfitted or what extras will be offered. The i8 M is expected to be available in a fixed-roof coupe and a ragtop roadster body type, similar to the current model’s selection. The i8, which sat low to the ground and had two-tone paintwork when it was first released, is still a captivating piece of design today. Of course, those lovely buttresses and butterfly doors will never go out of style. The 20-inch bi-color light-alloy wheels and a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic roof add to the visual spectacle.

The i8 is 184.9 inches long (with a 110.2-inch wheelbase), 76.5 inches wide (excluding mirrors), and stands only 50.8 inches from the ground, contributing to its low, wide stance. The car has only 4.6 inches of ground clearance, which adds to the drama but necessitates caution when pulling into and out of steep driveways. According to BMW, the curb weight of the BMW i8 Coupe is 3,501 pounds.

The i8 M will be BMW’s playground for future styling, just like the current car, with unique materials, cutting-edge technology, and eye-popping shapes. Although nothing is known about the i8 M’s interior, we expect BMW will solve the i8’s challenging ingress and egress by equipping the new car with front-hinged doors and a lower side sill to make the interior more accessible. Storage and cargo capacity will most likely be restricted, but a front trunk (or “frunk”) may be added to provide more luggage room.

In the area of in-car infotainment, a lot may happen in three or more years, so details regarding what might be available in the i8 M remain unknown. In the Vision M Next concept, BMW debuted the Boost Pod, a futuristic take on infotainment with many glass screens and a head-up display that gives the driver access to car-related information and on-board entertainment functions.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain for the i8 M is expected to be similar to the current i8, with an electric motor driving the front wheels, a mid-mounted gasoline engine, and an electric motor driving the rear wheels. Instead of the i8’s turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder gas engine, BMW says the new car will have a turbocharged four-cylinder; the company also claims a total system output of 591 horsepower, which is far higher than the i8’s 369 horsepower. The i8 M will be able to compete against rivals such as the Acura NSX, Lexus LC500h, and Polestar 1.

The current i8’s electric driving range of 18 miles is underwhelming. BMW has been tight-lipped on parameters like battery size, although the Vision M Next concept’s electric driving range is 62 miles. That means BMW engineers found a way to get many more miles out of the present car’s 11.6-kWh battery pack, or they found room for a considerably larger one. The latter is almost certainly the case. The i8 M’s battery, range, and charging capability will be released closer to the car’s on-sale date.

It isn’t cheap. The BMW i8 starts at $147,500 before taxes, licensing registration, and the brand’s $995 destination charge. That’s $15,800 less than the i8 Roadster, but it’s still more than the excellent Porsche 911 GT3 ($143,600). At publication, BMW had not yet confirmed the price for the i8 Ultimate Sophisto Edition.
