BMW says that the new vehicle will use a turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine as opposed to the i8’s turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder gas engine, and the combined output of the gas and electric power systems will be 591 horsepower, far more than the i8’s 369 horsepower. The i8 M’s upgraded engine gives it a leg up on the Acura NSX, Lexus LC500h, and Polestar 1.
BMW has remained tight-lipped on specifics like battery capacity, although it has stated that the Vision M Next concept’s electric driving range is 62 miles. With only 18 miles of electric range, the current i8 is hardly spectacular.
