2024 BMW M2 CS Price, Review, Specs

2024 BMW M2 CS Price, Review, SpecsThe BMW M2 CS Special Edition is the final model of the current M2 generation. Compared to the M2 and M2 Competition, it has a smaller footprint, more power, a lower curb weight, and adaptive suspension, making it one of BMW’s M Performance Division’s finest achievements in the realm of pure enthusiast cars. If the M2 is a driver-focused vehicle, the M2 CS is hyper-focused. The M2 CS has BMW’s soon-to-be-legendary S55 twin-turbo straight-six engine, which makes 444 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, and an incredibly stiff chassis responsive. This gives the CS a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds, which is 0.2 seconds faster than the Competition model. not a significant difference for a vehicle that costs over $24,000 more. The question is whether the M2 CS’s additional upgrades and special edition status make it financially worthwhile. Then again, with few competitors and the Mercedes-AMG CLA45 not quite in the same league, it doesn’t matter how much BMW wants to charge for the CS; it’s well worth it.

The M2 CS is a brand-new special edition that signifies the end of the current generation of M2, and if you purchase one, you should let others know how special it is. Carbon is the most noticeable difference between the standard M2 COMP and the M2 COMP. You receive the roof components, a new vented hood, mirror caps, a front splitter, a trunk spoiler, and a rear diffuser. In addition, unique lightweight wheels are added, along with many Alcantara interior modifications. The transmission tunnel is also made of carbon fiber, and the seats are breathtaking M4 Competition buckets. The engine has been returned to be as powerful as the M4, and for the first time on a 2 Series, the suspension is an M Adaptive setup.

The M2 Competition results from BMW’s meticulous design and aerodynamic approach. Beginning with the front fascia, there is a high-gloss black twin-slat kidney grille with programmable LED headlamps with daytime running lights (DRLs). The rear is adorned with an M spoiler and chrome-tipped quad exhausts that are also functional. Numerous color trim options are available, including Long Beach Blue, Sunset Orange, and Alpine White. In addition, it comes with 19-inch forged bi-color Y-spoke wheels and an M Sport package.

Weight-wise, the M2 Competition weighs more when equipped with an automatic transmission. Overall, it is considerably larger and heavier than its competitors. Consequently, reliance on driver assistance packages grows. The wheelbase could have been a bit shorter, which would have increased its cornering stability. The coupes’ naturally lower center of gravity contributes to BMW’s overall handling.

The M2’s effectiveness relies heavily on its small size and lightweight, and the CS variant is no exception. The length from end to end is 175.6 inches, whereas the wheelbase is 106 inches. Excluding the mirrors, the width is 73.7 inches, and the height is 55.7 inches. The manual model’s curb weight begins at 3,583 pounds while adding the seven-speed DCT automatic increases this to 3,638 pounds. However, the weight can be reduced slightly by substituting carbon-ceramic brakes for the standard M compound setup.

Interior

The 2 Series is cramped for rear passengers in any configuration, and the M2 CS is no exception. Although advertised as four-seaters, only infants would be comfortable in the back seats. In the front, headroom and legroom are more than sufficient for passengers of any size, and the pedals, steering wheel, and additional controls are conveniently located—the power-adjustable front seats with memory offer lumbar and thigh support and an extensive range of motion. Moreover, visibility is excellent in all directions. Overall, the CS is a comfy and supportive place to sit, so long as you’re in the front seats, and the Alcantara dash detailing distinguishes it and makes it feel special. The trunk of the M2 CS is surprisingly spacious on paper, measuring 13.8 cubic feet. In a vehicle of this size, that’s not bad at all. Due to the shape of the box, it is only possible to fit two medium-sized suitcases and a few carry-ons in the back. In addition to door pockets, a small glovebox, and two cupholders, there is a phone holder in the cabin. The center armrest bin has been removed, however.

The 2024 BMW M2 CS retains many of the M2 Competition’s features, including push-button ignition, ambient interior lighting, a rearview camera, parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams, dual-zone temperature control, dynamic cruise control, and a limited-slip differential. Adaptive suspension, heated and power-adjustable front seats, auto-dimming and heated power-folding wing mirrors, and the standard traction and stability programs with variable movement modes are also included. The carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic roof panel prevents the installation of a sunroof. The interior of the M2 is minimalist, but the infotainment system is functional. The focal point is the BMW’s iDrive system, housed on an 8.8-inch touchscreen. The M2 CS includes two USB ports, Bluetooth, voice control, SiriusXM satellite radio, navigation, voice control, and Apple CarPlay as standard equipment. Android Auto is conspicuously absent, but an excellent Harman Kardon Premium Sound System with 12 speakers is standard equipment.

Engine

The M2 CS is equipped with the same engine as the outgoing BMW M3, a twin-turbo straight-six with 444 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. The CS generates peak torque around 2,500 rpm, so there is no turbo lag when launching the little car from a stop, and there appears to be acceleration reserve at any speed. It is not an exotic-sounding engine when the S55 straight-six is revved. Instead, it sounds somewhat industrial. But in a body as small as the M2 CS, the S55 is very dangerous when let loose.

Our loaner had a dual-clutch seven-speed transmission rather than a six-speed manual. Changes are swift, decisive, and purposeful. It is the ideal complement to the engine for speed. Unfortunately, there are problems associated with daily driving. The first is that the dual-clutch transmission lacks a torque converter to engage the engine at idle. That means pulling away from a stop or navigating parking lots at a crawl can be somewhat jerky. It also means that the vehicle will roll backward when on an incline, as if a manual transmission clutch were engaged, which is not what you expect from an automatic. You will become accustomed to that, but perhaps not the jerky engagement while cruising through town. However, as soon as you reach a back road or track, you will immediately forgive yourself.

With a 13.7-gallon fuel tank, the CS can travel approximately 274 miles under mixed driving conditions. The manual M2 CS achieves city/highway/combined EPA ratings of 17/24/20 mpg, while the DCT version achieves 16/23/19 mpg on the same cycles. The M2 Comp has respective scores of 18/25/20 and 17/23/19. Throughout our week with the CS, we never approached 19 mpg, and despite some freeway driving, we only briefly saw 17 mpg before settling at 16 mpg.
