Surprisingly, it’s paired with an eight-speed ZF transmission. Dual-clutch transmissions, like the seven-speed in the previous generation of M5, were developed to speed up the shifting process. ZF’s eight-speed transmission offers shift times that are nearly as rapid. On the other hand, some road testers long for the days when shifting gears caused a sharp jolt to the head. We may be old-fashioned, but we appreciate not getting kicked in the back as we move from second to third gear. The transmission can be driven in one of three modes: eco, Sport, or Track, just like the engine, suspension, and AWD system. Efficient, in particular, delivers on its promise of hassle-free, lightning-fast gear changes, as do the other options. When set to Sport, the transmission will hold onto a gear so that the torque band is available instantly, while when set to Track (available only with the Competition option), the dial goes all the way to 11. Even in the most aggressive setting, the gearbox retains a trace of that kick feedback typical of dual-clutch transmissions. The new BMW M3/M4 is better off without the dual-clutch message because they use eight-speed automatic information instead.
The M5 won’t win any awards for environmental friendliness in the United States, but it’s about average for the class. The EPA estimates that the combined fuel economy for the M5 and M5 Competition will be 17 mpg. According to the EPA, the RS6 Avant and RS7, in 2024, are predicted to achieve 14/21/17 mpg on the highway. BMWs have a standard 20.1, giving you 341 miles of driving range.
