2024 BMW X1 Redesign, Specs, Price

2024 BMW X1 Redesign, Specs, PriceWe’ve had a soft spot for BMW’s first-tier SUV, the X1, for a while now owing to the X1’s nimble handling, eager character, and practical design. The 2024 model has been redesigned from the ground up, and the results are significant upgrades over the outgoing model in every respect: chassis, powertrain, and interior. Standard all-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission complement a new 241-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine. BMW claims that the X1’s slightly bigger exterior dimensions have translated to more room within the interior than the X1’s primary competitor, the Mercedes-Benz GLB-class, which is also a two-row SUV.

The BMW X1 SUV will debut in 2024 with a new design. Behind the more aggressive dual-kidney grille is a more powerful four-cylinder engine. Its increased external dimensions suggest a significantly more spacious cabin than its predecessor. The sDrive28i, a front-wheel drive variant, has been discontinued in favor of a single, all-wheel-drive model for the current generation. In the meantime, the X1 is only available with the M Sport equipment package, which includes unique styling cues and an adaptive M suspension. A more powerful M-badged vehicle may be on the way. Keyless entry, a panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming mirrors, and a wireless smartphone charging pad are all available as part of the xDrive28i’s optional Convenience package.

BMW’s new design language for its SUVs has been described as “monolithic,” so you can expect to hear that word a lot. Slab-like surfaces, flat door handles, significant squared-off wheel arches, and a dramatic front face with massive but not overwhelming kidney grilles are all explicit references to the full-size halo’s design. While the rest of the invention is vast and aggressive, the LED headlamps are retracted over the front corners of the automobile. There isn’t even the signature Hofmeister kink in the daylight window openings; instead, they’re clean and square.

LED taillights follow the more conventional design of L-shaped housings that merge into a full-width bar below the rear window and logo, while the roof-mounted spoiler adopts the distinctive double-bubble shape seen on the Concept XM. Satin aluminum is used for the roof rails, grille surrounds, window surrounds, and other elements, while 18-inch V-spoke alloy wheels with all-season tires are standard equipment for the angular wheel wells.

BMW’s new X1 SUV is more significant than its predecessor, even though it has the same basis and is still considered a premium subcompact. It’s now 177.2 inches in length, 72.6 inches in width, and 64.6 inches in height, an increase of 1.7 inches in each dimension. The larger track widths and longer wheelbase (106 inches) improve the vehicle’s maneuverability and stability. The standard ground clearance is 8.2 inches, and the optional adaptive M suspension reduces it by another 0.6 inches. The new X1’s curb weight of 3,750 pounds is only 44 pounds more than the old one was, despite its increased dimensions.

Interior

The 2024 BMW X1 is more significant in all three dimensions than the outgoing 2022 model; however, this is mainly due to the vehicle’s increased length, height, and width. Options include a panoramic sunroof as part of the Convenience package, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel as individual add-ons, and a rearview camera as standard. Ambient interior lighting, a power liftgate, and dual-zone automatic temperature control are standard on all versions. Toggle-switch shift lever, floating center console, all-digital instrument cluster, and designer touches like textured speaker grilles are just a few samples of how the cabin has been updated.

BMW’s smallest SUV now comes with the company’s cutting-edge iDrive 8 infotainment system. The X1’s digital dashboard is a sleek single panel that acts as a gauge display and an infotainment screen, much like the bigger iX electric SUV and the premium 7-series sedan. You can get navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio on all trims as standard equipment. Optional convenience packages include a wireless smartphone charging pad and a head-up display, a Harman/Kardon sound system, and a 360-degree exterior camera system as part of the premium package.

Engine

The performance of the 2024 BMW X1 has been somewhat enhanced despite keeping the same X1 xDrive 28i moniker as the previous-generation 2022 model. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is the same, but it has been updated with a Miller combustion cycle, port and direct fuel injection, and new combustion chamber geometry. Total output is now 241 hp with 295 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 13 hp and 37 lb-ft, respectively. The automatic torque converter has been replaced with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The X1 28i xDrive, which only comes with all-wheel drive now (the rear-wheel industry was an option in previous years), can accelerate from 0 – 60 miles per hour in 6.2 seconds and has an electronically restricted top speed of 130 miles per hour when equipped with all-season tires or 149 miles per hour when fitted with performance tires.

“A sporty and competent all-rounder for adventure and the daily,” as BMW puts it, describes the X1. To achieve this goal, we have reworked the suspension to include new axle kinematics, aluminum hydro mounts, and a quicker, more responsive steering calibration. The rear suspension is now a three-link design that works in tandem with a subframe that houses the axle. Conversely, the capabilities and footprint of compact springs and dampers have improved. New wheel slip limiting mechanisms in the stability control system assist the mechanical systems by adjusting their interventions in response to your driving and road conditions. The Adaptive M suspension has frequency-selective dampening and a reworked sport steering setup with a more direct ratio on the steering rack, all while reducing ride height by 0.6 inches.

The new X1 has yet to go to the EPA’s test labs to get its mpg and fuel efficiency ratings for the American market. It is fair to assume that the familiar model will evolve due to increased capabilities and several updates. BMW has created new low-friction wheel bearings to improve the crossover’s efficiency. The unique DCT transmission with expanded ratios and participation from the GPS, depending on the topography of your drive, will undoubtedly offer benefits. As a general rule, the 2022 BMW X1 xDrive28i’s fuel economy was 23/31/26 mpg in the city, on the highway, and combined. Those numbers should increase, which is excellent news since the new car has a 14.3-gallon gasoline tank.
