2024 BMW X2 Redesign, Spy Shots, SpecsIn the United States, the original BMW X2 was different from the smash hit that the German automaker had planned for. Sales fell behind every other BMW SUV and sedan in the US before it was canceled; BMW could have given it a significant update like the larger X3, but instead, it is focusing on the brand-new X2.

Despite our lack of information, the second-generation X2 will look substantially different from the first and have updated powertrains and an all-new interior like the recently revealed X1. This also means they’ll use the same FWD platform instead of the enormous CLAR architecture that underpins BMWs, starting with the 2 Series Coupe. With these updates, BMW expects the X2 to attract more customers than its predecessor.

Weirdness pervaded the original 2024 BMW X2 generation. Its profile was more like a hatchback than the coupe shapes of the X4 and X6. The 2019 BMW X2 has undergone significant changes to its exterior design, as evidenced by spy photos. In essence, it’s a scaled-down X4, but its squarer front and headlights are more reminiscent of the new X1.

Considering that the new X1 is one of BMW’s best redesigns in recent memory, it would bode well for the new BMW X2 crossover if it could achieve the same level of success while also adopting a sportier silhouette. The variant that has been spotted so far is the more powerful X2 M35i, which features wider wheels, quad-exit exhaust outlets, and a conspicuous spoiler at the back; however, standard equipment on less powerful vehicles should have 18-inch wheels and less flashy styling. The grille, thankfully, has been kept at a manageable size.

Like the new X1, base models are likely to include LED headlamps and satin aluminum exterior trim, while Shadowline trim should be optional on lower edges and standard on higher derivatives. The new X2’s sloping roofline is readily apparent, but the camouflage makes it difficult to figure out the specific form of the taillights.

We expect a comparable expansion in the new BMW X2’s measurements to that of the new X1. The old X2 was 172.2 inches long, 71.8 inches wide (without the mirrors), and 60.1 inches high. That’s short compared to certain rivals; with the new model’s more visible crossover form, we anticipate it to be taller. We expect the X2’s specifications to mirror the new BMW X1, which has a curb weight of 3,750 pounds.

Interior

Even though we have yet to see the 2024 BMW X2 cabin, we have high hopes. Even though the previous X2 cabin felt high-end and was well organized, its exterior design lagged behind the competition. Lucky for us, we’ve seen the new X1’s interior (shown above and below), and it’s a significant improvement. In addition to being more appealing to the eye, the new model’s technology completely outclasses its predecessor’s. The new X1’s Curved Display, which includes a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch center information display, will probably be carried over to the X2. In addition, BMW’s newest iDrive 8 software will power the infotainment system and feature stunning new visuals. The navigation system now has an additional feature called Augmented View, and the Intelligent Personal Assistant expands the types of commands that may be given using the user’s voice. In addition, the new BMW ID allows for greater customization than ever before and can be updated wirelessly.

The X2 should include the same basic features as the X1, including two separate climate controls, blind-spot monitoring, a power liftgate, a forward collision warning system, and a parking assist system. The BMW X2 probably has standard seats upholstered in perforated SensaTec 2.0 fabric, with options for more flashy designs like contrast stitching and even sports seats. While the X2’s specs are significantly higher than the X1, extras like a 360-degree camera system and a head-up display will cost you more. It is unknown if the new X2’s second-row passengers would experience a loss of headroom due to the vehicle’s steeply sloped roof. Like the X1, we anticipate the X2’s cargo space to fall short of the X1’s 25.7 cubic feet.

Engine

The next 2024 BMW X2 should use the same powertrain as the X1. This implies the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine as previously. In contrast, the X1’s new four-pot uses the Miller cycle in its assembly. Its enhanced outputs of 241 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque result from a combination of port and direct fuel injection and a modified combustion chamber shape. The previous generation of the X2 28i only produced 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, so the increase in torque is particularly welcome. In addition, the new X1 no longer offers a front-wheel-drive option, instead only offering xDrive all-wheel drive. The upcoming X2 will likely have similar features. The new X2 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in around 6.2 seconds if equipped with the same outputs and dual-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission as the X1.

Spy photos and the X2’s marketing as a sportier alternative to the X1 lead us to believe that a more potent M35i version will be released. Since the current M235i Gran Coupe generates 302 horsepower and can reach 60 in under five seconds, we can assume that the new X2 M35i will be as potent. If the rumors are true, the new X2 will be built on the same UKL2 platform as the new X1. BMW updated the steering geometry, axle kinematics, aluminum hydro mounts, and suspension construction of the latest X1 by adding a three-link rear suspension and a rear-axle subframe. The X2 could, however, have a sportier suspension adjustment that trades off some rough-road adaptability for sharper reactions on the polished pavement.

The fuel economy for the new BMW X2 should be the same as the X1 xDrive28i, rated at 25/34/28 mpg by the EPA. About 400 miles may be driven on a single fill-up of the X1’s 14.3-gallon gas tank. While the final X1 and X2 were less fuel-efficient overall, they featured more giant 16.1-gallon gas tanks, allowing them to drive further between fill-ups.

2024 BMW X2 Release Date and Price

The new crossover isn’t anticipated to go into production until late 2023, so don’t expect to see the BMW X2 hit the market until at least early 2024. However, the all-new X1 will hit the market a year before the 2024 X2, and its design and features will provide essential clues about the more athletic X2.

The pricing of the 2024 BMW X2 has yet to be announced, but given that the new X1 costs more than $3,000 more than the previous generation, a price increase is to be expected. If BMW continues to offer a base front-wheel-drive X2, it will likely start at close to $40,000, up from the base MSRP of $36,600 for the 2023 model in the United States. The xDrive version adds another $2,000 to that, and the recently spotted M35i, which is faster and has more power, will likely cost closer to $50,000. Regarding pricing, the Volvo XC40 will go up against the Audi Q3, which starts at $38,700, and the Audi Q5, which starts at $36,700. BMW’s resurrected X2 is an all-new model for 2024 and is scheduled to hit the market in September of that year.
