The standard X3 is one of the finest luxury small SUVs available. The X3 xDrive30e combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to provide 288 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. A standard eight-speed automatic transmission is included, but as rivals such as the Lexus NX and Volvo XC60 hybrid continue to advance, we must question whether the X3 is the best option. With the addition of more standard features for the 2021 model year, it may maintain its leadership position. Let’s see whether it still has what it takes to make an electric SUV as appealing as a conventional one.
The X3 hybrid was offered to the U.S. market as a brand-new model in 2023, although those who waited for the 2021 model received several practical upgrades. The most significant development is that Android Auto is now available alongside Apple CarPlay. Live Cockpit Professional is now standard on the 2021 BMW X3 hybrid, including a 12.3-inch driver display and a 10.25-inch touchscreen display. SiriusXM satellite radio with 360L and the Active Driving Assistant with lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and pedestrian recognition is standard.

The exterior of the BMW X3 plug-in hybrid has received a refresh, or life cycle impulse, as BMW puts it. Beginning with the front, there is a redesigned bumper and new LED headlights. BMW has given these headlights a dynamic 3D design, making them smaller and sleeker than the previous model. The front bumper is a unibody structure with triangle vents. The same kidney grille with active grille shutters remains. The X3’s 8-inch ground clearance is sufficient for traversing rugged terrain.
The side appearance remains largely the same, but new 19-inch and up to 21-inch wheels have been added. The back of the vehicle boasts new 3D LED pincer claw taillights and more comprehensive trapezoidal chrome exhaust tips for a sportier appearance. The X3’s extended profile might make it challenging to maneuver in confined spaces. In terms of looks, the $4,100 M Sport package adds Shadowline exterior trim, gloss-black roof rails, an aerodynamic kit, and 19-inch y-spoke bi-color wheels.

The attractive inside of the X3 is already well-equipped; 10-way power-adjustable front seats with adjustable side bolsters make it simple to select a comfortable driving position. The rear seatbacks recline, and the padding on all seats is adequate for longer excursions. The remainder of the X3’s cabin is attractive and expertly assembled, with well-selected materials and tight panel gaps. Our test vehicle’s plastic woodgrain trim appeared and felt natural; the stitched faux-leather dash, door coverings, and nickel-finish metal trim add a touch of luxury. In our test of carry-on suitcases, the X3 performed close to the segment average. There is space for seven carry-ons behind the second row, allowing each passenger to have one plus two additional, and twenty with the rear seats folded down. But the Cadillac XT5 is the best in its class at hauling freight, so heavy carriers should focus on this car.
BMW’s iDrive interface satisfies all requirements for a modern luxury car’s infotainment system. A standard 10.3-inch infotainment display with in-dash navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Optional is a more prominent 12.3-inch infotainment display. A Bluetooth phone connection, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and one USB port are standard, but all other entertainment features are optional; a second USB port and a wireless smartphone charging pad are optional for those who want to charge two devices simultaneously.

There are no differences between the 2021 and 2024 BMW X3 hybrid models. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter turbo-four producing 181 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. If that seems a little meager, have no fear. The combustion engine is complemented by an electric drive motor that generates 107 hp and 77 lb-ft of torque for a combined 288 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The heaviest X3 with xDrive all-wheel drive and a Z.F. eight-speed automatic transmission accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph.
Although the X3’s fuel economy is not the best in its class, it is pretty decent. The official ratings for the 2024 BMW X3 Hybrid have not yet been released, but we expect it to receive the same rating as the 2024 model. This model achieved 60 MPGe using electric and combustion motors and 24 mpg using only gasoline. BMW estimates an all-electric range of 17 miles, while its 13.2-gallon gas tank should get you approximately 317 miles if you’re gentle with the accelerator. Using a level 2 charger, the X3 Hybrid’s battery will be charged in roughly three hours.

Premium European computers are typically associated with high prices, and the X3 is not precisely destined to become the world’s best deal. With a starting price of $49,600, it is not aggressively priced. This model qualifies for a $5,836 federal tax credit, which reduces its MSRP and makes it less expensive than a standard X3 xDrive30i. The destination fee is $995. Those savings can be wasted if you design a model with everything; the price can go over $65,000.
