2025 BMW X5 Redesign, Specs, Price – It would be unusual to see a review of the new BMW X5 midsize SUV that didn’t rank it highly. The current G05 generation has been a hit with consumers due to its high quality, powerful performance, and practical design since its 2019 debut in the United States. The 2025 X5 has returned with a new look and many enhancements, including a range of potent new powertrain options ranging from a 375-horsepower base 3.0-liter to a storming 523-horsepower V8 and a robust new plug-in hybrid. However, new competitors have emerged since then, including the excellent Genesis GV80, which attempts to provide premium SUV features at an affordable price. Other contenders include the Mercedes-Benz GLE and Audi Q7, both from Germany and the perennially updated Porsche Cayenne, widely regarded as the pinnacle of driver-focused SUVs. Does the X5 still provide the total package, considering it is no longer the least expensive option, the most athletic, or the most spacious?
BMW has revamped the X5’s look for 2025 with new headlights, taillights, grilles, bumpers, and wheels. Gloss black details, quad exhaust pipes, and an M emblem in the grille distinguish the top-tier M60i variant. A new 48-volt hybrid system improves the performance of the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six and 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 engines, while additional tuning on the six-cylinder increases power to 375 hp. The performance-oriented model has changed its moniker from M50i to M60i, but its 523 horsepower remains unchanged. The xDrive50e, a replacement for last year’s xDrive45e plug-in hybrid model, features 483 horsepower and 40 miles of electric-only driving range, an increase of 94 horsepower and 10 miles. BMW’s newest iDrive 8 software interface comes standard on all X5s, with an upcoming update to iDrive 8.5 planned for the summer of 2023. The Highway Assistant hands-free driving technology, which we first tried in the new 7-series premium luxury sedan, is now also available for the X5. The xDrive40i is the X5 because it offers outstanding performance and excellent fuel economy, which we highly value. It has the speed of a sports sedan, all-wheel drive traction, and a compact SUV’s low price. The Premium package’s head-up display, LED exterior lighting, ability to start the engine remotely, and Harman/Kardon sound system are all worth the extra cost.
2025 BMW X5 Redesign
The 2025 BMW X5 bodywork was updated for 2025, so it still appears modern. It has the classic BMW aesthetic without the divisive rabbit-tooth grille. Boxy may need improvement, but the X5’s spacious cabin and trunk compensate for its lack of swooping lines. The M60i’s new muscular front bumper contrasts with the six-cylinder car’s smooth lower maw and silver vertical grille slats. At the same time, the M Sport body kit, black mirror caps, and dark Shadowline exterior trim set it apart visually. The optional upgrade transforms a 40i into a car almost identical to the M60i, except for the grille, which comes standard on both models. The standard wheel size across the lineup is 20 inches, with alternative measures of 21 and 22 inches. Power-folding side mirrors, a power liftgate, and LED headlights are standard on all X5s. A kidney grille with lights is an extra feature. The M60i comes equipped with upgraded adaptive LED headlights that have blue highlights. All six-cylinder vehicles have twin tailpipes, whereas the M60i has four.
Because of its size, the BMW X5 competes with midsize SUVs like the Mercedes GLE and Porsche Cayenne. All X5s share the same 194.2-inch length, 78.9-inch width (not including mirrors), and a 117.1-inch wheelbase. All models are 69.5 inches tall except the PHEV, which stands at 69.1 inches. The 40i has a ground clearance of 8.7 inches, whereas the M60i has 8.3 inches. The sDrive40i with rear-wheel drive has the lightest curb weight at 4,919 pounds, while the xDrive40i with all-wheel drive is heavier at 4,998 pounds. The lightest is the M60i at 5,355 pounds, while the most serious is the PHEV xDrive50e at 5,573 pounds.
Only Alpine White is available at no extra cost for the 2025 BMW X5’s eight exterior colors (including the two base 40i trims and the PHEV). Mineral White, Carbon Black, Black Sapphire, Skyscraper Grey, Brooklyn Grey, Manhattan Green, and Blue Ridge Mountain are the seven metallics that may be purchased for $650. All the hues above, except for Blue Ridge Mountain, are available at no extra cost as exterior paint choices for the M60i. However, it now comes in five new metallic colors specific to the trim: the free Marina Bay Blue, the $1,950 Dravit Grey, the $1,950 Ametrin, and the $3,600 matte Frozen Pure Grey.
The first and second rows of the 2025 BMW X5 have plenty of room for adults, and the third row is reserved for children. Depending on the trim level, high-quality materials, numerous electronic device charging ports, and many opulent extras will greet passengers as soon as they enter the cabin. The front seats are power-adjustable and include a memory setting for the driver. All trims feature a tilt-and-telescoping power steering wheel, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, automated climate control with individual settings for the driver and front passenger, a power rear liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, and an array of colors for the interior lighting. The X5 can be outfitted with high-end luxury SUV features such as massaging seats, a remote start, soft-close doors, soundproof glass, a leather dashboard, heated front armrests, and a steering wheel. However, doing so would significantly increase the sticker price. Bowers & Wilkins offers a high-priced surround-sound audio system with diamond-domed tweeters. The X5 has plenty of room for transporting goods. We could stow 11 bags behind the second-row seats while still having plenty of room in the trunk. We could fit 26 cases when we folded down the SUV’s rear seats, which can be done from either the side or the back. The GLE class performed just as well as the X5 in this test, although its rear seats are more difficult to fold down.
When you first step inside an X5, you’ll notice a curved wall of screens covering almost two-thirds of the dashboard. BMW’s iDrive infotainment interface is accessible via a 14.9-inch touchscreen, while a smaller 12.3-inch screen acts as a gauge display for the driver. The X5 debuted with iDrive 8, but a free OTA update to iDrive 8.5 is now available. It is expected to come in the summer of 2023. There is also a rotary knob located in the main console that can be used to adjust settings. CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration systems, a wireless charging pad, and a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot are all standard equipment.
The 2025 BMW X5 base 3.0L turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine still features a 48V mild-hybrid system, but its outputs have been increased from 335 horsepower and 331 lb-ft to 375 hp and 398 lb-ft for the 2018 model year. Launch control is included on the base model, which is offered with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (xDrive). The M60i’s 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 engine has also undergone extensive revisions, and for the first time, it is equipped with a 48V mild-hybrid system to increase fuel economy. Power and torque figures remain unchanged from the previous model year, at 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet. It comes standard with xDrive all-wheel drive, an M Sport exhaust system, and a differential because rear-wheel drive isn’t an option. ZF’s famous eight-speed automatic transmission is standard across the board and the sole transmission option.
Thanks to its 48-volt mild-hybrid system, the BMW X5 40i has excellent gas mileage compared to other vehicles in its class. This year’s significant improvement in efficiency is the result of a revised six-cylinder engine. The X5’s mpg ratings improved this year, with the xDrive40i now achieving 23/27/25 mpg on the EPA’s city/highway/combined cycles. This is significantly better than the competition. BMW has not yet announced official fuel economy estimates for the sDrive40i, but based on the model’s 2016 EPA ratings of 21/26/23 mpg, we can anticipate an increase of 2 mpg across the board.
Compared to the six-cylinder, the M60i’s marginal increase in fuel economy from 16/22/19 mpg to 17/22/19 mpg is a significant letdown despite mild-hybrid assistance. The new 21.9-gallon fuel tank gives the xDrive40i an estimated 547-mile range, while the M60i maintains its predicted 416-mile range from the previous model year.
2025 BMW X5 Release Date and Price
For 2025, the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) sDrive40i will cost you $65,200, while the all-wheel-drive (xDrive40) version will set you back $67,500. Both the PHEV xDrive50e and the M60i are priced at $89,300.
