With a pleasing mix of refinement and driver engagement, the 2024 X3 SUV moves closer to the territory of its four-door siblings. The X3, as its name suggests, is BMW’s answer to the popular 3-series wagon, and it borrows the 5-series’ engines and transmissions. The base model is powered by a 248-hp turbo-four, while the M40i is propelled by the company’s legendary 382-hp turbo-six, a machine whose smooth muscle never fails to astonish us. With its attractive appearance, the X3 can hold its own next to other fashion plates like the Genesis GV70 and Volvo XC60. The X3’s cabin is roomy and tastefully understated, but it’s loaded with high-end materials and convenient technology. Moreover, the X3’s athletic road manners don’t sacrifice its genteel nature or all-around SUV practicality when cruising. Still, its sporty handling is what wins over enthusiast drivers like the ones on our team.
The 2024 X3 remains primarily unchanged from the previous year’s model, which received only a mild facelift. Previously only available on the Premium trim, the remote proximity keyless entry system is now standard equipment on all models. Additionally, gesture commands for the iDrive infotainment system are no longer part of the Premium package’s optional extras. There is a new Skyscraper Grey Metallic color option for the 30i with the base engine. Regardless of their horsepower rating, all BMW motors have the same robust, refined personality. The M40i’s six-cylinder engine generates 382 horsepower and propels the car to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, but the four-cylinder is more than adequate. BMW’s core models, such as the 3 Series and the X3, tend to be less subject to stylistic risk-taking, so the design alterations from the previous year didn’t come as a complete surprise. The X3’s sporty, refined appearance is unchanged for the new model year. The taillight clusters in the back have a distinctive lighting signature that stands out at night, and the grille and the slim LED headlamps are well-executed. Alloy rims measuring 19 inches come standard on the base trim. Standard equipment includes satin-aluminum roof rails, a back roof spoiler, chrome tailpipes, and power-folding side mirrors. Intricately shaped taillights with adaptive brake lights complement the full-LED front lights. The M40i features 19-inch M wheels, Shadowline exterior trim, and an aerodynamic package, all contributing to the vehicle’s aggressive appearance. The 30i doesn’t come standard with a panoramic sunroof, but this one does, and it’s made of two pieces of glass. No unnecessary external options were installed on the Tanzanite Blue Metallic xDrive30i we tested. It’s a well-rounded product right out of the box, which is great for customers because they don’t have to spend extra to enjoy the sporty handling and plush interior.

The X3 sDrive30i has a curb weight of 4,079 pounds, while the X3 xDrive30i, with its heavier all-wheel-drive setup, weighs 4,149 pounds. The M40i, the largest of the lineup, weighs in at 4,392 pounds.
The Alpine White and Jet Black exterior paint jobs, come standard on every X3, and neither raises the MSRP. Carbon Black, Black Sapphire, Dark Graphite, Mineral White, Phytonic Blue, Skyscraper Grey, and Brooklyn Grey are just a few metallic colors that can be yours for an extra $650. However, if you’re set on Carbon Black or Brooklyn Grey, you’ll need to spring for the M Sport Package on top of your color choice. The most expensive option is $1,500, covering two high-end hues: Tanzanite Blue II Metallic (used for our demo vehicle) and Aventurin Red Metallic. The M40i loses Jet Black from the color scheme but keeps the rest of the same bold variant’s colors. In addition, the M40i can be outfitted with commemorative red brake calipers and a 50th anniversary BMW M logo. This emblem will replace the existing ones on the hood, trunk, and wheel hubs, and it features semicircles in blue, dark blue, and red, the typical M colors.

With 10-way power-adjustable front seats featuring movable side bolsters, the BMW X3 2024 upscale cabin is well-appointed right out of the box. The backseat passengers can recline their chairs, and the padding on all seats is suitable for extended drives. The remainder of the X3’s cabin is attractive and competently assembled, using high-quality materials and leaving no gaps between panels. Our test vehicle’s plastic woodgrain trim looked genuine, while the stitched faux-leather dashboard and door coverings added a further touch of class. In our evaluation of portable luggage, the X3 fares about as well as the segment average. Behind the second bench is space for seven bags, enough for everyone to have their plus two more, and 20 bags when the back seats are collapsed. However, the Cadillac XT5 is the category leader in cargo capacity, so it should be a top contender for heavy haulers.

The BMW iDrive user interface is fully equipped with all the features expected of a high-end vehicle in the present day. A 10.3-inch infotainment monitor with built-in navigation, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay compatibility is standard equipment. An upgraded navigation system featuring a 12.3-inch screen is available as an alternative. The only required infotainment features are Bluetooth phone compatibility, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and one USB port; a second USB port and a wireless smartphone charging pad are available as extras for those needing to charge two devices simultaneously.

The X3 lineup benefits from two spirited powertrains’ adaptable, powerful, and refined performance. In the sDrive30i and xDrive30i, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged motor generates 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The standard gearbox is an eight-speed automatic with paddle shifters that is both powerful and refined. So if you’re looking for an enthusiastic and fast engine that does the job without any significant flaws, this one will do just fine. Whether traveling around town or on the highway, it feels robust.
The 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six found in the M40i and other models makes it sound more like a “proper” BMW. It has an eight-speed automatic transmission and 382 horsepower. Putting a 48-volt mild-hybrid system on the inline-six gave it more power. This starter/generator device includes brake energy recovery, which temporarily increases 11 hp and is immediately available. Gliding between 15 and 99 mph briefly shuts off the gas engine, improving efficiency and expanding the start/stop system’s functionality. The M40i is quick enough that you won’t need the X3 M very often, so you’ll probably be happy using the full 382 hp.
Although a 48-volt mild-hybrid system is now standard on the M40i, fuel economy has remained the same. As for fuel economy, the sDrive30i achieves 23/29/25 miles in the city, on highways, and combined. Fuel economy numbers for the xDrive30i are 21/28/24 mpg city/highway/combined. Despite being significantly more potent, the M40i approaches the performance of its less powerful relatives admirably. It has a 21-city, 26 routes, and 23 combined EPA ratings. The range of each variant is between 395 and 430 miles, thanks to the 17.2-gallon gas tank.
